When I was a child I had a terrifying dream. I saw hideous creatures gathering in the shadows.
They appeared to be conspiring to do me in so I turned and ran.
The chase was on! I vividly remember that the harder I pushed against the ground the heavier my body felt. My legs felt like two balloons filled with liquid lead.
As I approached a cliff, the fear of my pursuers overwhelmed me so I quickly eliminated all other options except jumping.
In my panic I stumbled and plummeted into a chasm so deep it seemed to have no end.
It was at that moment that I awoke screaming in a cold sweat - still flailing about, still looking around for my pursuers. I remember my mothers words as I lay there in bed terrified, "It´s okay, it´s not real. Don´t be afraid, it´s all in your imagination."
How many of us have had dreams like that when we were children? What do you tell your children when they wake from a nightmare? I´d bet it´s something similar to what my mother told me.
You may even tell yourself "it´s not real" when you awake from a terrible dream. So if that´s true, that what is in our imagination can´t hurt us, why do people let their fears keep them from achieving all they are meant to?
Do you have a reoccurring dream for your life or your business that you can´t seem to bring into reality? Can you tell me what is stopping you from reaching your dreams? If you look hard and answer honestly I can guarantee it is something that is not real.
There are people of all ages and backgrounds who have overcome so-called "real" obstacles to achieve their dreams. Old or young, rich or poor, educated or school drop outs - these people have conquered their fears and proven with success that what may seem like real obstacles to others around them, is only an illusion.
I know of a woman who at seventy-six took up mountain climbing and by age seventy-nine scaled the summit of Mount Fuji. The world´s richest man, Bill Gates, never finished college.
Oprah Winfrey overcame significant childhood abuse and impoverished beginnings to become the wealthiest self-made woman in America. I could go on and on, but I´m sure you get the point. There are no real barriers, only those which you impose on yourself.
I know what fear and stress are; having grown and sold two successful business and now building two more. I know from first hand experience what it is to have doubters question your decisions.
If I would have listened to well-meaning family and friends I would not be living my dream residing and working in Hawaii. It takes concentrated effort to overcome fears. It takes belief and it takes focus. (It also takes a heck of a lot of patience, self-resolve, and hard work. But that´s another article.)
Our minds were created to work most efficiently by focusing only on one belief about any given situation. Your mind can only lock onto one belief at a time which makes things simple.
The trick is that your mind does not differentiate between a poor focus and a positive focus. Whatever focus is strongest you will hone in on like a laser guided missile. If you are focused on your fears, what do you think you will get? That´s right! The very thing you are afraid of.
Like a child in a dream running from dragons your mind will only be focused on the fear of what could happen instead of focusing on what you must to do to reach your goal.
If you doubt this principle, think of someone you know who is always complaining that they never get what they want. Stop and think about what they talk about the most and what their attitude is like and you´ll see my point.
Fears are those obstacles you see when you take your focus off your goals.
